Watch out for the "What's App Web" Spam Virus/Malware
I just got this piece of crap spam malware/virus injector in my mail. It came directly from a friend's gmail account so obviously he picked up the malware from somebody.
Don't click on it. Notice the spelling error in the word "length". The domain with the link comes from maloureyes.com. That doesn't mean anything, because typically these spammers hack a relatively untended website, inject their crap from there without the owner being the wiser.
Interesting that they would try to play off the Whats App name. Don't be fooled.
Spam And Eggs, or .... Green Eggs and Spam
I get a lot of spam, because I publish my email address in various places. I get requests asking for money. I get a lot of requests from Africa, Nigeria, Burkino Faso, etc asking me for my banking information so they can transfer millions of dollars into my account. A whole bunch of Russians send me emails telling me that my penis is too small, and they have the pills to fix it. I get spam asking for money. I get spam asking me to support right wing and weird causes. However, my latest bit of spam is a new one for me. It is perhaps a sign of our brave new world. I got spam asking me for eggs -- human, frozen eggs. Read it and weep:
I’m touching base as I consider my next steps in this journey to motherhood. I have always wanted to be a mom. I’ve had five pregnancy losses in the past 9 years, most recently through the failed IVF (in vitro fertilization) attempt in November. I still carry this longing to be a mother and would like to try again. Statistically, my chances of carrying a pregnancy to term at my age, with my eggs, are virtually nil. Roger and I are beginning to explore the possibility of donor eggs from someone under 35 as younger eggs greatly improve chances of pregnancy.
We are reaching out to people we know who may know someone with eggs or embryos already frozen and no longer needed or who may be interested in egg donation. There is, unfortunately, no one we know in this position. I’m wondering if there’s anyone you might know who might consider donating?
Roger and I are being supported by a wonderful fertility clinic in Montreal and feel confident in the caring and competent staff; donors will be well taken care of.
I recognize that this is a big request about personal matters. Please let me know if any other information would be helpful.
Thank you
Just idly wondering if this could be considered human trafficking? There is a new Dr. Zeuss book on the horizon, "Green Eggs and Spam"?
The "I Quit" Spam Insult Spam
I tell you, the spammers and malware guys are getting more and more entertaining. I recently got a piece of spam that had the subject:
Subject: Can you handle $365 every 100 minutes?
When I looked at the body of the message, it said this:
Hey,
I'm done taking crap from you. I've worked myself to the bone for 8 years now and you don't appreciate a thing I do for you.
You're arrogant, egotistical and you have no loyalty whatsoever. Every time I EVER did anything right, you always took credit for it…and I let you…because I was scared of losing my job.
A true leader takes the blame when things go wrong, and praises the people who did the job when things go right…YOU do it the opposite.
I found someone who takes me seriously:
http://somegoodservice.com/c.php?k=1 blah blah lots of parameters
I don't need you anymore.
Ciao.
See you tonight.

It's hilarious. The URL domain for the link is somegoodservice.com. I didn't bother checking it out, because of lot of sites that inject malware or viruses are legitimate sites. They have been hacked with a weak password and the hackers add a new page that injects malware or viruses. The new page is not seen unless you log in as admin and do a directory listing of all of the directories and look for a file that doesn't belong.
Note the address. They can't decide where they are in Canada or the US with fake street names that don't even make sense.
I hope that nobody falls for this, but I bet that a fair amount are tempted just by sheer curiosity.

Hilarious Facebook Spam
Sometimes spammers are just plain idiotic. I got this spam designed to look like it was sent by Facebook. It was sent to my email address. I am not on Facebook, but my Facebook name would not necessarily be my email address. However I supposedly had notifications for my email address. All that I had to do was click the link (yeah right).
The absolutely hilarious part was the unsubscribe at the bottom. Here is the notice in its entirety:
This notification was sent to <my email address>.com. If you don't want to receive these notifications from Facebook in the future, please unsubscribe. Facebook, Inc., Attention: Department 415, PO Box 10005, Palo Alto, CA 94303
That means I have to send a letter by snail mail -- regular post to Facebook to unsubscribe from their electronic notices. Idiots.
I do notice that most of my spam now comes to my Yahoo mail account. Google is quite adept at filtering it out.
What's App Spam
This piece of garbage appeared in my inbox. It is the spammers latest attempt to inject my machine with a virus.
Ever since WhatsApp sprang to prominence by being bought by Facebook for billions of dollars, scurvy, scum-of-the-earth spammers have seen the prominence as a new way to inject computer viruses. So who is doing this? Those soulless, Commie, frigging lawless, a@@holes in Russia. Here is the sending email address:

Funeral Home Virus Spam
(click for larger image)
Now doesn't this beat all. I got virus-injection spam purporting to be from a funeral home. All that I had to do was click a link. Here is the text of the spam (pictured above):
Eubank
Funeral Home & Cremation Services
For this unprecedented event, we offer our deepest prayers of condolence and invite to you to be present at the
celebration of your friends life service on Sunday, February 9, 2014 that will take place at Eubank

Notice the nice little touched like the copyright and designed by footer. It has the characteristics of regular spam. The mail domain is from one domain. When you hover over the link, it is another domain, and none of the names are the same as who the sender is supposed to be (Eubank Funeral Home in this case).
Speaking of the link, it goes to the domain DanielCespedes.com. It turns out that Daniel Cespedes is a guy who died while escaping police custody in Florida for statutory rape. He linked up with a minor MySpace celebrity called Kiki Kanibal who was a minor and apparently raped her. The domain is parked and under construction, but the spammers hacked the account and put their virus in a hidden page in that domain where the link takes you. Half the spam that comes is from hacked legitimate accounts. If you have dormant accounts, websites, email addresses etc, it helps to change the passwords regularly and make them really hard to guess with a good combo of letters, numbers and characters.
All this to say, never click out of curiosity. Remember, curiosity killed the cat.
Belarus Spam in Yahoo mailbox that's kind of weird
With the widespread security breaches at Yahoo mail, weird things were happening. I would get Yahoo mail in my inbox but I couldn't open it. The twitterverse was alive with people with the same problem. After those problems were fixed, I started getting weird spam originating out of Russia and it old satellite states -- namely Belarus. Notice the .by domain name for Belarus. (Incidentally Belarus translates into English as White Russia. Apparently there is White Russians and Black Russians -- darker skinned versions that have nothing to do with Africa).
The weirdness of the above spam (other than the fact that there were no links to click), was that there was tiny hidden text in the above spam. When I selected and copied the text into notepad, this is what actually appeared:

I am thinking that some amateur spammer tried to embed binary executable code into the message and it didn't work. Several hours later, more Russian spam showed up in my Yahoo inbox, and it was the more conventional variety:
Mrs. Irene Ohms LIKED YOU and left a new MESSAGE for you
Irene-Ohms
Hello, chief sweetheart. This is Irene ...
I found your profile via facebook .
I was delighted. You're pretty!
I want to show some hot pics to you, sweeting.
Your YAHOO mailservice sucks :) So Click on the link bellow and then click OK button again lol
I wish to meet you soon! Bye-bye sweeting ))

Salut sweet.. It's me Juliet!
I found your profile via linkedin . I was amazed!
You're handsome!
I want to have a hot talk with you, sweetheart !
Your YAHOO mailservice sucks btw! So Click on the link bellow and then click OK button again !
I wish to meet you soon! Bye-bye darling !
The ironic bit again, is that they mention Yahoo in the message and I believe that they have compromised some part of Yahoo. The clickable domains were all Russian.
To Yahoo's credit, the spam filters picked it up, but I think that they have a tough row to hoe with quality and security issues.
Kids Live Safe Email Spam -- Dangerous
This is the absolutely latest in egregious spam. It purports to be from Kids Live Safe.com which apparently alerts you if there is a registered sex offender in your neighborhood. The website itself uses scare tactics and sells email alerts.
However, this spam is from another domain, websaving.com and this is a sure sign of a virus or malware injector. There is embedded script not to display the domain that it takes you to, so you cannot check validity by hovering over it with a cursor.
These are all signs of virus, trojan and malware activity. Delete it and empty your trash and in now way click on it.
Malware Spam Says That Your Mailbox Has Reached Its Limit
I am seeing a new kind of spam lately. The sender says that it is "Email Administrator" and the subject is "Notification Alert". The message tells me that I have exceeded my limit of my mailbox, and I need to click a link to fix it. Here is the text of the message:

If you received this in Spam, please kindly move it to inbox.
You notice that the administrator is using the French spelling. That would suggest that the perpetrator is from a French speaking country in Africa, like Senegal, Algeria, Burkina Faso or any other former French colony.
The other thing to note, is that they are using an email address not from the same domain. That should raise red flags.
What I did do, is investigate the links where you have to click to load the malware. (Don't try this at home folks. I am a professional, and I have a machine that I can trash. I use it to trap viruses and have a look at them).
There are two domains in the various messages. Here are the domains:
www.ayotec.co.uk
www.kleine-bucher.de
These are legitimate domains. What these guys do, is hack websites that are not updated regularly or the source code for the web sites are checked infrequently. They simply add another landing page that isn't visible to the website with a link, but can be reached directly with a URL. They hide their malware there, and as a result, the originator is untraceable.
Just another day in the war on Malware and Spam.

This enables you to access your favourite music, images and videos via the internet anywhere. RapidShare helps you stay organized - at home, on the move or at work.
Your RapidShare Team
There was a clickable link to access the file. Yeah right.
I have some advice for RapidShare.com. Your landing page said that 198,000 users used RapidShare yesterday. I bet you that up to 99% of that traffic was for spam, or illegal distribution of music, videos and other IP and copyright infringement material, if traditional numbers for spam hold up. You simply have no way of knowing, but I can garner an inkling of it, since I am the recipient of spam from your platform.
More Spammer Scumbags
(click on pic for larger image)
Spammers are having a more difficult time and have to get creative. Spam filters are becoming more effective. Numerous blogs and websites expose spammers, and lately Google has stopped showing keywords which hinders spammers.
Of course you still have the totally dumb assholes who harvest email addresses and send you spam. Those, you know, are the rank amateurs and the dumbasses actually think that it is a legitimate business practice. Some of these jokers even claim that they are internet marketing experts.
I have lately seen upping the game in combining traffic fakers with directed spam. Case in point. A new entity of scumbag spammer emerged called seoanalyses.com. They traffic fake to blogs (if you don't know what traffic faking is, just scroll down a bit on this blog for articles and explanations). But get this. In the past traffic fakers got you as a web master to click on their links for everything from fake Viagra to online courses.
The traffic fakers of the past were shotgunning spam hoping some of it would stick. These guys have a semi-official sounding name and their spam is directed at you as a web master, hoping that you will buy their pathetic solutions to supposedly increase your traffic and business. Caveat Emptor.
epodcastnetwork.com SPAM !!!
Legal Definition of Spam
As a public service announcement and for the edification of dumbass spammers, I provide the following definition of Spam. Public Law No. 108-187, 15 U.S.C. 7701, et seq., defines spam as a "commercial electronic mail message" as "any electronic mail message the primary purpose of which is the commercial advertisement or promotion of a commercial product or service (including content on an Internet website operated for a commercial purpose)." The primary characteristics of Spam are:1) Lack of visible and operable unsubscribe mechanism in all emails.
2) Lack of a legitimate physical address of the publisher and/or advertiser.
3) Message sent to a harvested email address.
I have zero tolerance for spammers who fit the above-mentioned legal criteria.
Here is the latest spam fitting the above criteria in my mailbox by dumbass spammers:
(start clip)
I have been physically threatened by a spammer because of my posting of his illegal spam. My attorney suggests that I save the screen shots, and remove the content as it will be evidence. A criminal felony complaint is being filed with the appropriate police departments against the perpetrators of the illegal spam for the resultant felonious threats to me for exposing their spamming business practices.
(end clip)
Now the ironic thing is that they have a fancy domain account and yet they want me to send money to a gmail account. Yeah, right!
New Type of Spam -- Blog Comments
NOTE: IF YOU ARE READING THIS BECAUSE YOU GOT AN EMAIL FROM ME, READ THIS BLOG ENTRY, BUT ESPECIALLY THE TEXT IN RED BELOW.
I am getting a new type of spam -- link spam in my blog comments. Link spam isn't new, however the way it is presented is.
Here is the story. I became aware of link spam when my mother-in-law got a malware virus that sent messages to all of her email contacts. The message was that I could earn good money by posting links. This is of course, blackhat SEO.
The twist is this. They picked a blog of mine that gets a lot of traffic, but not many new updates. This is from a blog about my high school days. I have run out of content (pictures that I have taken in high school), but my classmates and school mates google and find the pictures. It is quite a popular blog and it is also featured in Wikipedia. So this blog is targeted. I must get at least 20 or more comments on various blog posts. They all contain links. But they are written in a friendly manner so as to pass muster. Here are two examples:
Hey there, I think your site might be having browser compatibility issues. When I look at your website in Opera, it looks fine but when opening in Internet Explorer, it has some overlapping. I just wanted to give you a quick heads up! Other then that, excellent blog! Stop by my webpage: Florist st cloud Fl
Hі, itѕ pleаsant post regaгԁing media prіnt, wе all be familіar with meԁia is а fantastic sοuгce of facts. Alsο visit my blоg - Look for Special discounts Motels costs
The links are everything from Florida florist shops to chiropractors in Wisconsin to whatever. I am sure that the owners of these links pay the spammer to link post and create visibility of their websites. There is one born every minute. What I have started to do, is to inform the owners of the links that they were scammed.
If you were referred to this blog post by email, your pathetic attempts to raise your website profile has failed. If you paid to have your links published, you were cheated. You are participating in a spam scheme and you have lost your money.

Spam ~ Fighting Fire With Fire

When you sit for long periods of time in front of a computer, and you have a fertile imagination like mine (and we all know what makes things fertile), weird and wonderful ideas pop into my head.
I regularly get spam from countries like Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and other places that tell me that the sender has access to millions of dollars and needs my help to get at it. I just have to send my identity, bank account number, a payment or two to facilitate things, and I will be a millionaire. Yeah right. Not only are they spammers, but they are scammers.
One thing that I have learned while writing healthcare software to be misused by cheating Nigerians, is that they are very very superstitious. Knowing this, I have decided to fight fire with fire when I get a piece of spam from them.
I have a throw-away email account that is mostly anonymous, so I use that in my arsenal. I send them a return email to all email accounts in the spam (usually there is an originating email address and one in the body of the email). I send them an email worded something like this:
You are an evil man. You are dishonest piece of dog scum. You send emails trying to steal money from people. I am disgusted by pigs like you. So I have gone to the voodoo Obeah -- the witch doctor and I had her lay a horrible curse on you. You will have horrible luck, and a terrible life. You will become sick. The curse cannot be lifted. I have given over possession of your soul to the Devil to play with. You will probably die within a year of a horrible disease. Your evil will be punished. People will piss on your grave.
Ha ha aha ha ha ha ah ha ... you are doomed .. just for a stupid email .. ha ha
One thing about living in Caribbean, I learned about Obeah, the west African magic, and it adds cred to my email. They know all about Obeah.
I get a remarkable sense of satisfaction in jerking their chain, because I KNOW that culturally, they can't help worrying about an email like this.
Microsoft Turning into Spamming National Enquirer

(click on image for larger picture)
During World War II, intelligence agencies used something called content analysis to determine conditions and morale in war-time Germany. They did this with soft information. They would get regional and small town weekly newspapers, go through them with a fine tooth comb.
Typically, these papers would have lists of local people that died. From that, they could create overall casualty estimates. The local papers would have notices that the butchery was closed due to lack of supplies. That would tell the Allies of food shortages. An article telling folks how many ration coupons was required for a liter of gasoline was a good window into fuel.
Essentially, content analysis is taking innocuous bits of information, making inference about them and coming up with a bit of knowledge. It is the process of integrating facts into knowledge about a situation.
Analysts on Wall Street do this by looking at balance sheets. However analysts miss the big picture very often. I am still irked that Arvind Bhatia was all over the media, pumping up Facebook saying that it was the best thing since sliced bread. He should be fired or resign in disgrace.
That aside, let's put Microsoft under the lens. I could not believe that my Hotmail inbox had spam from Microsoft. And to top it all off, it was salacious spam of the National Enquirer ilk.
My own content analysis tells me that their search engine Bing is suffering. Of course I don't have to cogitate hard to come to that fact. I have several websites, and I can see what search engines are the referrers, and Bing shows up once in a blue moon.
However this latest spam from Microsoft trying to encourage me to use Bing is pretty much a sign of Seattle desperation. The spam says: "We can't make this stuff up. Scary disease is turning cats into living robots !!!!!!". THe fine print says that you are seeing some of the hottest Bing searches.
I suppose that their reasoning, is that if they spam their entire hotmail userbase, and get a few clicks, then their numbers will improve. But this strategy is just as lame as those used by the spammers of malware and the Twitter spammers who say: Click here because I saw a funny picture of you on the Internet.
How the mighty have fallen. Microsoft used to be so supercilious that they didn't need to advertise at all. Now after begging didn't work, they tried scaring. After logging out of hotmail, they re-directed to a page that tried to tell me that my secure Chrome browser was a 2.5 out of 5 and that I should upgrade to the virus haven Internet Explorer. When the scare tactic didn't work, they sunk even lower and tried the tabloid effect with the kitty robots.
So, chalk up another dead man walking. Microsoft has had its day. And I am a geek but I oughta be a stock analyst. And if I was, I would advise my clients to short the living crap out of Microsoft stock. You will make a ton of money. (Fine Print: This by no means constitutes investment advice. You should consult a professional to be properly advised on how to lose money in the stock market. It is their job to mislead the ordinary investor and give inside information to institutional clients.)
SMS Spam Revenge Fantasies

My chief revenge fantasy is this. To find out what number and service is sending you the spam, go to the message options menu and check the SMS message details. The details include the mobile phone number of the message sender and the message centre number of the cellular service provider. Get the originating number.
I would set up my laptop as a server. In this blog you would find python code on how to send SMS from a server. I would then go to a public place that offered free internet. I would put the number into the code, and the message would be "Stop sending spam stupid, and yo mama is fat!" I would then put the send code in an endless loop, and go and order a latte and sip it slowly while my laptop churned away, eating their message credits up.
Of course I would never do this, because I need to have impeccable ethics to work for some of the people that I do. That is why this is a revenge fantasy only.
In the meantime, the next internet billionaire, is the guy who figures out how to stop spam at the source.
